Oh, How We Share!

Faithful disciples respond to an increasing awareness of the abundant generosity of God by sharing according to the desires of their hearts.—Doctrine and Covenants 163:9

Our fiscal year began July 1, 2011, and ended June 30, 2012. I now can report that we reached our budget of $14 million for mission tithes—worldwide ministries. This was about $1.1 million more tithing received than in our last fiscal year. Thank you! You truly are responding to God’s abundant generosity in your life.

When we share with such abundant generosity, oh, how ministry is shared in the church! In this past fiscal year you gave nearly $2 million to Abolish Poverty, End Suffering and Oblation. As depicted in the accompanying chart, families and individuals received over $900,000 of direct assistance, which provides hope and the needed support just when life seems most difficult.

World Hunger received $570,000. These funds will be distributed through grants to deserving organizations, congregations, and programs that want to partner with us to eliminate hunger worldwide.

Tangible Love received nearly $200,000, which means grants can be given for programs of compassionate ministries. And, finally, $133,000 was provided for relief when disasters occurred, like the floods in the Philippines and El Salvador and the earthquake in Haiti.

Oh, Canada!

Something remarkable is stirring in and through the hearts of our brothers and sisters in Canada. Jim Poirier, bishop of Canada and counselor-designate in the Presiding Bishopric, says that when he first saw the tithing dollars for this past fiscal year (July 1, 2011–June 30, 2012) he thought there was an error.

There wasn’t. The tithing budget was set at $1.1 million. Canadian Saints responded to God’s abundant generosity by sharing from the desire of their hearts and contributed $317,025 more than last year in tithing. So, while all contributions to mission tithes increased—worldwide ministries grew by a remarkable 10 percent, Canada’s tithing contributions increased 27 percent. Oh, Canada! Thank you!

Sharing from the Heart

I love being presiding bishop because almost every week I receive a letter with a check that affirms for me that God’s abundant generosity, through the Holy Spirit, is touching our hearts. Here is one such letter from a good sister (adapted for this article):

Enclosed please find a check for $100. I realize it is just a token of my gratitude to God for the blessings of life. According to facts and figures, I don’t owe tithes, but my heart indicates I do.

I have given all I can through the years and still participate in reunions, classes, church attendance, etc.

Be assured that I contribute in every way that I can at age 85.

Doctrine and Covenants 163:9 describes beautifully this good sister’s and our sharing, and God’s promise to each of us:

“… Give generously according to your true capacity. Eternal joy and peace await those who grow in the grace of generosity that flows from compassionate hearts without thought of return…”

Oh, how we share!

Share with a grateful heart out of abundance…not out of obligation or guilt…but with joy, hope, love and peace as we see how others benefit from your generosity.
